Alma TED is a needle-free, in-office scalp treatment. A handpiece uses ultrasound-based acoustic energy together with air pressure to help a topical hair-care formulation pass through the outer layer of the scalp — TED stands for TransEpidermal Delivery. There are no injections, no blood draw, and no numbing involved, and the session is usually described as comfortable and warm.
The outer layer of skin is an effective barrier, which is part of why topical products for the scalp have limited reach. According to Alma's product documentation, the TED handpiece combines acoustic sound waves with pressure at the scalp surface to temporarily improve the passage of the applied formulation into the skin. The intent is to support the scalp environment around the follicles rather than to alter the underlying medical cause of hair loss.
That distinction is worth holding onto. Describing how a device operates comes from the manufacturer; independent evidence of how well it performs against other options is a separate question, and the published literature on this specific technology remains limited compared with long-established medical treatments for pattern hair loss.
Most people who ask about hair restoration have noticed a widening part, more scalp visible under bright light, reduced density at the crown or temples, or more shedding than usual. Some are looking for a needle-free option after ruling out injectable treatments. Others want to add something to a routine they are already following.
Hair loss is a category, not a diagnosis. Androgenetic hair loss, telogen effluvium following illness, childbirth, or significant stress, thyroid or iron issues, medication side effects, traction from styling, and scarring alopecias all look different under evaluation and respond differently to treatment. Scarring types destroy the follicle and require medical management; sudden or patchy loss, scalp pain, redness, or scaling should be seen by a dermatologist or physician rather than treated cosmetically. Where a medical cause is suspected, the appropriate next step is referral, not a device.
Alma TED does not cure hair loss, and no in-office treatment stops a progressive condition permanently. Hair grows slowly, so change is judged over months using consistent photographs, and results vary between patients. Where hair loss is progressive, ongoing maintenance is generally part of the conversation from the start.
