Recovery is not one experience. It scales with how deep and how aggressive the treatment was, and knowing the general pattern makes the first week far less unsettling.
Recovery from CO₂ resurfacing tracks with treatment intensity. A light fractional treatment generally involves several days of redness, swelling, roughness, and flaking. Deeper ablative resurfacing involves an open-wound healing phase with meticulous wound care and redness that can persist for weeks to months. Everything below is general information, not aftercare instructions for your specific treatment — follow the written instructions your treating provider gives you.
Ablative laser energy removes a controlled amount of skin and heats the tissue beneath. The more surface treated and the deeper the energy goes, the more repair the skin has to do. Fractional delivery leaves untreated skin between the treated columns, and that reservoir of intact tissue is what shortens healing relative to fully ablative treatment at similar depth.
Any timeline given before treatment is an estimate. Healing speed differs between patients and between areas of the face.
Healing skin is more vulnerable to UV, and sun exposure during recovery increases the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — darkening that can take months to resolve and can undo the point of the treatment. Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, reapplied as directed, along with shade and protective clothing, is standard guidance from dermatology organizations both during recovery and long term. In a coastal climate with year-round sun, this matters more than most patients expect.
Call the practice that performed your treatment if you develop increasing pain rather than improving discomfort, spreading redness, warmth, yellow crusting or drainage, fever, blistering, or clustered painful blisters that could indicate a cold sore reactivation.
