IPL vs. ClearLift: What's the Difference?
One uses broad-spectrum light to target visible color in the skin. The other delivers laser energy below the surface. Here's how they differ and why one may be recommended over the other.

Years of sun show up as brown spots, uneven tone, and visible redness. IPL targets that visible color — with real limits worth understanding first.
IPL uses filtered broad-spectrum light absorbed by pigment and by small blood vessels in the skin. That absorbed energy heats and damages the target, and the body clears it over the following days and weeks. For visible sun damage, that generally means brown spots look darker briefly, then flake away, while background redness and fine surface vessels become less obvious.
UV exposure stimulates melanin production and, over years, produces uneven clusters of pigment rather than an even tan. It also degrades collagen and elastin and contributes to visible vessels. Most of what patients describe as "looking older" on the face, chest, and hands is cumulative photodamage rather than chronological age. Living where the sun is out most of the year — as it is along the Santa Barbara coast — means more lifetime exposure, including the incidental kind from driving, walking, and being outdoors on overcast days.
IPL is not a texture treatment. Deep lines, scarring, and significant surface irregularity generally call for a different approach, which is one reason evaluation comes first.
Eye protection is worn, a gel or cooling is applied, and pulses are delivered across the treatment area. Most patients describe a quick snap with each pulse and warmth afterward. Sessions are short. Expect redness and mild swelling immediately afterward, with treated spots darkening over the next day or two and flaking off over roughly the following week. Do not scrub or pick them.
Because the treatment targets melanin, candidacy depends on your skin type and your current level of tan. Deeper skin tones carry higher risk of pigment change with light-based treatments, and a recent tan is a reason to postpone regardless of skin type. Photosensitizing medications, pregnancy, recent isotretinoin use, active infection in the area, and a history of light-triggered conditions or of post-inflammatory pigmentation all factor into the decision.
Professional evaluation matters for another reason. Not every brown or changing spot is benign sun damage, and lesions that could be skin cancer should be assessed by a dermatologist rather than treated cosmetically. If something on your skin is new, changing, bleeding, or does not heal, that warrants medical evaluation first.
IPL does not prevent new sun damage. Without daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, shade, and protective clothing, pigment tends to return. Sun protection is genuinely part of the treatment plan, not an afterthought.
